Prayers Needed!

Please continue to be praying for us. We're in a sticky situation. Just when we thought it couldn't get worse...

Our school struck out again. It turns out that I am not insured because I am under 26 years old. If I was over 26, we would have full coverage. But since I'm not 26, I am not insured, but rather, fully liable for the damage to our car and the other car. No one in our car (there are 4 of us) is 26. So, even though we have been paying for car insurance every month, we have no coverage. I have to pay out of pocket for everything...

Thank goodness for a guy named Chris. He's one of the school administrators. He speaks English fluently and spent some time in America. Even better, because he knows how it feels to be in a foreign country and not know what is going on.

The driver of the other car estimated his damages at over 4,000,000 Won (around $3700 USD). YEAH RIGHT! They are saying that car is a really expensive car. As one of the staff here who was translating for me put it, "You hit the wrong car!" The kid, and I say kid because he was only 19, was driving his father's expensive car. Like I said in the last post, he got out of the car and threw a huge hissy fit. He was cursing and yelling and everything. Well, now he is claiming that he is injured and he needs to see a chiropracter for 3 weeks.

That's not all. He's also saying that he wants us to write a letter saying that we will pay for any future physical problems he may have. He's planning on joining the army in October and he's "worried" about his condition getting worse, so he wants us to agree to pay for any future physical problems he might have. Heck, no!

Like I said, this is a sticky situation. The police officer said I am not fully at fault. I did have my left blinker on to get over into the left lane, but that doesn't matter in Korea. See this post about some other driving differences between Korea and America. According to the police officer, a left signal in Korea could mean that you are turning left, or it could just mean maybe, like you're thinking about it. Regardless, this guy was driving pretty recklessly and managing to sideswipe my car at a pretty fast speed. My car was barely moving.

Our car had more damage than his, and I was the one hit on the driver's side...his was on the passenger's side, but he's claiming bodily harm. Whatever. He was a really rude, arrogant kid. Chris said that when he went with the kid and his dad to go get an estimate on the car last night that he was still cursing and being rude toward them, as well as his dad. That is shocking to me, because respect for elders is everything in this culture. Much much more so than America.

So, that's our current situation. They tried to get the guy to take his car to a certain dealership but he refused and wanted to go to a different one (probably more expensive. The kid is claiming physical injury. I have to pay out of pocket for our car and his to get fixed, but they got the estimate on his down to 1.3 million Won instead of 4. That's a start.

Chris is trying to get the school to pay at least 50% of the costs. If they had been on top of things (they NEVER are), then they would have known that insurance did not cover us as drivers, and we wouldn't have signed up to use the car in the first place. Instead, we've been driving it around for the last 9 months, not knowing we were uninsured, and yet still having to pay monthly insurance.

This could get worse if the other guy starts to bring the police into and focus on how I was uninsured (unknowingly). That is illegal in Korea.

So, please keep us in your prayers.

I love this verse in Psalm 9:10
"And those who know Your name will put their trust in You, For You, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You."

We are standing on the promises of God. He will not forsake us.

Romans 8:28
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

Bad things happen. But God can turn them for good.

I'll be praying for you guys! This is such an unfortunate situation, sorry it happened. But God can and will take care of this (and turn it for good).

I am sorry you are both having to go through this. Can the American Embassy help you in any way? Maybe an American/Korean lawyer? Shame on the school for making you pay for insurance and then not insuring you. Everything will work out and I'm sure it is very frustrating for both of you. Hang in there and I will be praying for you.
Love,
Aunt Cathy
